After Market Lenses FAQ:

Why Should I Buy an After -Market Lens?  Well;   of course a major underlying reason is cost.  After-Market lenses often come at a fraction of the price of their "major-brand" equivalent. Also;  many times the after-market companies offer a focal-length range or feature mix that's just not available from the Major brand folks.  For example...just try to find a 28-300mm lens with Canon's name on it;  in manual focus FD mount.  They don't make one.

When Should I Buy an After-Market Lens? A few thoughts to consider.  Maybe you don't have a clear idea as to what the different focal lengths are used for,  and you want to experiment at a lower cost.  Maybe you're in the market for a focal length that you know you won't use all that often...a fish-eye for example.  You don't want to tie up a lot of money in a lens that will only be used for a few shots here and there.  Or maybe you're the type of person who feels good when you find that "diamond in the rough"...a great lens at a great price!

Are After-Market Lenses the same quality as Name-Brand Lenses? Sometimes, Maybe, Never.  There's no one answer to that question.  I've personally owned and used many very good quality after-market lenses,  and I've also tried some that were absolute dogs.  Read below for some suggestions as to how to tell the difference.

How can you tell a Great Quality Lens from a Dog?  Shoot Pictures with it.  There's really no other way.  However,  Vivitars' Series One's,  Tokina's ATX's and most newer Tamron's are apt to be quite good.  As for the lesser known brands...there are a lot of good lenses to be had...but you really have to shoot a test roll to discover them.

Has Russ' Camera and Video Tested the Lenses offered for sale?   Yes and no.  We certainly test for correct focus and zoom action;  and of course for proper diaphragm function.  Plus,  we won't offer a lens for sale that has damage or imperfections to the glass that would likely impact picture quality significantly.  But we don't actually shoot film with every lens listed here.   We will; however, do it for you prior to purchase for a nominal fee.  Read on:

Sure!   For a flat $15.00 fee,  our staff will tripod-mount a camera and shoot a roll of color print film for you;  print up the pictures and either answer your questions as to their quality via e-mail,  or we'll mail the pictures to you for you to make your own evaluation prior to purchase.
